On a day with blue sky, white clouds, and golden sunshine, Warner Bros./DC suddenly announced a surprising project: They will make a separate film about the famous villain Joker.
Furthermore, the film will be set in the 1980s, with a younger actor playing the Joker, retelling the origins of the Clown Prince of criminals in the darkest and most honest way.
Of course, for most people, this is a bit absurd: Who in the world would let a guy full of villains roam around doing evil things on screen.
Basically, Joker is no less than his version of the hero, so according to them, this clown having his own movie is something that should have happened a long time ago.
1. The film will be partly based on the original comic book
I would like to correct this: The Joker character has never had a specific origin.
The Joker has no name or specific beginning, and small details related to his identity are also narrated by him in an unbelievable narrator’s voice.
However, this is a film project revolving around the origin of the Joker, so the clown must have a story in life, and the only story telling about the origin of the Joker is the work The Killing Joke by author Alan Moore (
In The Killing Joke, Joker is a failed comedian with a pregnant wife at home.
Alan Moore turned the Joker into a tragic character to somewhat justify his crimes, and I’m sure `tragedy` is also included in the film’s `in the darkest and truest way` definition.
That’s just the beginning, but how will Joker’s path to becoming king of crime be told?
The elements of Brian Azzarello’s story will be enough (or even redundant) for Todd Phillips and Martin Scorsese to edit to make viewers chill at the young Joker’s journey to becoming a degenerate criminal in the movie.
2. The film will be based on Martin Scorsese’s own vision
This is the most touching guess, because Todd directed it, yet followed Martin’s vision.
Surely you remember or know movie titles like Raging Bull, Taxi Driver or Goodfellas.
This is really not a bad idea: The movie will focus entirely on the Joker, an original gang boss, who acts without mercy and terrifies others, with a rock and roll music theme and lyrics.
3. About whether the movie is in the DCEU or not
This is the most controversial part of the speculation: Although WB/DC has specifically said that this movie has nothing to do with the current development of the DCEU, they also do not deny that it exists in the future.
Where familiar characters are taken out of their usual context, and placed in another dimension of time and space, they may exist, used to exist, cannot exist or should not exist.
That is a common quote in DC’s Elseworld stories, implying that this new Joker will be in another dimension, really unrelated to the current DCEU (Multiverse idea).
The new Joker himself will escape the inherent constraints related to the time and space of the DCEU, allowing directors and producers to fully exploit new things without fear of causing paradoxes in the details.
4. 18+ or not 18+?
Conjecture about this issue is really a bit redundant, simply because this is the Joker, a psychopath with a sad personality who kills people and when he’s happy, he also kills people.
Could it be that the Joker will stab people without seeing blood, or torture without seeing images?
5. Who will be the new Joker?
As mentioned, the Joker of this project is very young, about to take his first steps on the path to becoming Batman’s most terrible villain.
If you want to surpass, or at least make a difference in front of these three people, the actor playing the Joker must also be top class.
Of course, everything just mentioned in the article is speculation from fans and the online community.
