Bloomberg on January 25 quoted a source close to the Kremlin as saying that Russian President Vladimir Putin is `testing` the US’s willingness to negotiate to end the conflict in Ukraine.
According to this source, `through indirect channels, Russian President Vladimir Putin is signaling that he is open to negotiations on a series of issues, including a future security agreement for Ukraine.
The source added that last month, some US officials received a signal from Russia about President Putin’s willingness to negotiate through an intermediary.` However, the source did not specify whether the intermediary was the party.
`Sources say that Putin may be willing to consider dropping his demand to maintain neutral status for Ukraine and even eventually abandon his opposition to Ukraine becoming a NATO member,` Bloomberg wrote.
However, some US officials, including White House National Security Council representative Adrienne Watson, said they did not see any signs that Russia was serious about the idea of negotiations.
Bloomberg analyzed: `Such information could sow division among Ukraine’s allies, isolate Kiev and weaken President Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s efforts to win international support for the attack.`
In addition, it also makes it difficult for Ukraine to call on allies and partners for additional aid.
The Russia-Ukraine conflict has lasted for nearly 2 years, but shows no signs of abating.
